Located in northwestern Costa Rica, Guanacaste is known as the "Gold Coast" for its stunning Pacific beaches, golden sunsets, and warm, dry climate. This province borders Nicaragua to the north and features extensive Pacific coastline with some of Costa Rica's most beautiful beaches.

Guanacaste is home to Liberia, the provincial capital, and Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR), making it one of the most accessible regions in Costa Rica. The province covers 10,141 km² and is home to approximately 400,000 people.

What sets Guanacaste apart is its unique dry tropical forest ecosystem, which creates a distinct landscape different from the rest of Costa Rica. The region experiences a pronounced dry season from December to April, making it a perfect destination for sun-seekers during the winter months.

Guanacaste Landscape

Tropical Dry Forest Climate

Guanacaste experiences a unique tropical dry forest climate, which is the driest in Costa Rica. The region has two distinct seasons:

Dry Season (December - April): This is the peak tourist season with virtually no rain, clear blue skies, and temperatures ranging from 25-35°C (77-95°F). The landscape transforms into a golden savanna-like environment, and this is when Guanacaste truly shines.

Green Season (May - November): The rainy season brings afternoon showers, typically in the late afternoon or evening. Mornings are usually sunny, and the landscape becomes lush and green. This season offers fewer crowds and lower prices while still providing plenty of sunshine.

Best Time to Visit: December to April for guaranteed sunshine and dry weather. May to July for a balance of good weather and fewer crowds.

Diverse Ecosystems

Despite its dry climate, Guanacaste is home to diverse wildlife and unique ecosystems. The dry tropical forest supports a different array of species compared to the rainforest regions of Costa Rica.

Mammals: Howler monkeys, white-faced capuchin monkeys, coatis, deer, peccaries, and various bat species. The region is also home to jaguars, though they are rarely seen.

Birds: Over 300 bird species including the elegant trogon, magpie jay, white-throated magpie-jay, and numerous migratory species. The region is excellent for birdwatching, especially near water sources.

Marine Life: The Pacific waters are home to dolphins, whales (during migration season), sea turtles (nesting beaches), and diverse fish species. Snorkeling and diving reveal colorful reef fish, rays, and occasionally sharks.
